PRISON
A place to detain prisoners who have yet to be and those who have already been sentenced to imprisonment

  •  

HENRY GURNEY SCHOOL
A school to detain inmates aged 14 to below 21 years who are held under orders issued by the Juvenile Courts

  •  

PROTECTIVE DETENTION CENTRE
A place to hold detainees under the Internal Security Act 1960

  •  

MORAL REHABILITATION CENTRE
A place to hold detained persons under the Emergency (Public Order and Prevention of Crime) Ordinance 1969 and the Dangerous Drugs (Special Preventive Measures) Act 1985

  •  

REMAND PRISONERS
Consist of persons held in prison pending trial 


  •  

SUBORDINATE COURT DETAINEES
Persons temporarily detained under order of the Subordinate Court

  •  

SESSIONS COURT DETAINEE
Persons temporarily held under order of the Sessions Court

HIGH COURT DETAINEE
Persons temporarily held under order of the High Court

SENTENCED PRISONERS
Prisoners who have been convicted by the court
  •  

Long Sentence
Means a prisoner who is sentenced to imprisonment for a period exceeding six months or consecutive periods the total of which amounts to six or more months

Short Sentence
Means a prisoner who is sentenced to imprisonment for a period less than six months or consecutive periods the total of which is less than six months

  •  
First Time prisoner
means a prisoner who was first convicted and put in prison.
  •  

Repeat Prisoner
A convicted prisoner who has been repeatedly imprisoned

  •  

Young Prisoner
Prisoner, less than 21 years old, who has been sentenced by the court

  •  

Drug Prisoner
Prisoner who has been convicted by the court for drug cases

  •  

JUVENILE DELINQUENTS
Persons aged between 14 and 18 years who have been convicted by the Juvenile Courts and placed in Henry Gurney Schools.

DETAINED PERSONS
Persons held under order of detention issued by the authority (Ministry of Home Affairs)

  •  

Internal Security Act 1960
Detainees are held in protective detention centres.

  •  

Emergency (Public Order and Prevention of Crime) Ordinance 1969
Emergency (Public Order and Prevention of Crime) Ordinance1969

Dangerous Drugs (Special Preventive Measures) Act 1985
Detainees are held in moral rehabilitation centres.

FOREIGN PRISONERS
Foreign nationals who are detained pending deportation to their countries of origin. They consist of prisoners who have completed their prison sentences and also those who continue to be held under the Immigration Act.

DEATH ROW PRISONERS
Prisoners categorised as high risk and consist of those who have been sentenced to death by hanging by the courts.

  •  

NATURAL LIFE SENTENCE
Prisoners who are sentenced to imprisonment for the whole of their natural lives with no date for release.

  •  

LIFE SENTENCE
Prisoners sentenced to 30 years’ imprisonment.

  •  

PERSONS DETAINED AT THE PLEASURE OF THE SULTAN/GOVERNOR/YANG DI-PERTUAN AGONG
Prisoners who are liable to be sentenced to death by the court but whose sentences have not been carried out because of their young age (juvenile) or they have been defined as being mentally disordered. These prisoners have no release dates and may be released only if pardoned by the Sultan/Governor/Yang di-Pertuan Agong. They include prisoners detained in mental institutions at the pleasure of the Sultan/Governor/Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
